Frequently Asked Questions

During the registration process, there are questions that we frequently received from different people interested in the Art of Hosting training. Whether you are a participant of this training, or you are interested in the future ones, the information below may be helpful to you. Please click on each question to reveal the answers. Please be noted that the organizers of future trainings may have different information for these same questions.

Training content & agenda

What is the content of the training? What will I learn? What is the agenda?
The content of AoH training is not fixed. There are some essential methodologies, frameworks and theories that are often shared in the training that the community often consider the DNA of AoH.
Depending on the needs of the participants, context of the training and the calling question, the hosting team will gather and define a detailed agenda 2-3 days before the training. The agenda will be shared on the first day of the training. As participants, you will get information about starting and ending time of each day, so that you can plan your travel. For reference, you can visit the page past training see what previous trainings looked like. It's more important to know that you will mostly learn through practices, by taking different roles in the designing, hosting and harvesting processes and working with others.
I have to miss some parts of the training, can I still join? Can I arrive late or leave early?
The tentative plan is to depart from Hanoi to Ninh Binh in the early afternoon on November 17th and to leave Ninh Binh mid afternoon on November 20. More details about timing for departure and arrival are shared in the Arrival Guide sent to all participants. It is not recommended to miss some parts of the trainings as different, but if it is your decision, please inform the organizers in advance and take care of your own transportation to arrive late or leave early.
What language will be used in the training? Will there be a translator?
This is an international training with hosts and participants from different countries.  English will be our official language. We will not provide a translator, it is simply not efficient due to the nature of the training. However, there will be a lot of group conversations during the training, and participants can choose their desired language then. In our experience of the past trainings, participants often supported each other to deal with the language barrier. The hosting team are also willing to spend time for side conversations when possible if you need support to understand the concepts better.
This year, we also plan to provide a English - Vietnamese glossary list of typical terms in the Art of Hosting community that may not be very common in daily life. We hope this helps a bit in getting along with the training.

Logistics & Finance

What time is the shuttle bus between Hanoi and the training venue provided by the organizers?
Typically the bus will depart from Hanoi at noon or early afternoon on November 17th, so that we can arrive around 2-3PM for checking in the hotel and prepare to start the training in mid-afternoon. Specific times are provided in the Arrival Guide sent to all participants.
For the trip back from the training venue, you can expect to leave at around 3-4PM. Specific time is also to be decided.
Where should I go to join the shuttle bus?
Typically the bus will depart from Hanoi center, in front of the Opera House. All participants will gather there to get on the bus unless you take care of your own transportation. Another option this year is to depart from the Noi Bai airport, since many participants want to travel straight to the training venue from the airport. Details of pick-up time, location and other logistical information will be shared with you the latest 2 weeks prior to the training.
Can I take care of my own transportation, hotel and food during the training? Will I pay less in that case? What can be the trade-offs?
Yes, you can take care of your own transportation, accommodation and food during the training.
  • If you use your own transportation, it won’t affect the fee you pay
  • If you take care of your own accommodation and food, we will let you know the deduction amount specifically based on your choices.
  • Since the Bai Dinh hotel is a bit isolated in the middle of the Bai Dinh pagoda complex, it takes quite some time to travel to the closest hotel / homestay. You can choose a different place to stay and travel back and forth everyday, but be noted that the training will be quite intense and may take a lot of energy from you. It is highly recommended to still have lunches and dinners in Bai Dinh hotel to save your time between training sessions.
How much discount or scholarship can I get if I can’t afford the fee?
Our pricing for Art of Hosting Vietnam is based around our guiding principle of "offer what you can and ask for what you need".
So we would love to ask you first: How much of a financial contribution are you able to make for the training? How much do you need support with?
We've been offering 10-15% discount based on Sustainable Ticket and Generous Ticket to participants who come as a group. And we've had groups from Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore so far.
If that is still too high, please feel free to choose the Base Ticket (USD 450 per ticket), which covers the minimum cost for the training.
If the Base Ticket is still high for you, we have a Seed Fund to provide scholarship. The Seed Fund was made possible thanks to the larger community and some other participants of this training. The Fund is limited and always changing due to people's requests for scholarships. So the earlier you ask, the better.
You can consider your needs and let us know via email, or in the registration form, the specific amount of scholarship that you would love to ask for. We will check our Seed Fund at that point and let you know if we can offer that amount or not.

Other questions

How often do you organize an Art of Hosting training in Vietnam?
As the AoH training is not owned by anyone, there is no company or organization to set a rhythm for the trainings. A training happens when there comes a dedicated group of people calling and organizing it.
In Vietnam, after the first training in 2016, there were people stepping up the next two years to organize the 2017 and 2018 gatherings. And now, 4 years later, the AoH is finally back. But no one can say for sure when the next one will be. If you feel strong intention and dedication to call for the next training, please step forward, have conversation with one of the stewards or experienced hosts in the field, gather a team and together make it happen.

Will I receive a certificate after the training?
Normally, in any Art of Hosting training in the world, no certificate is provided since you don't need any certification to start hosting and harvesting. If there are requests, we can provide a certificate of your participation in the training.
Can I bring my family?
It depends on the room capacity of the Hotel & the number of participants. If there is room available the answer is absolutely yes. Otherwise if it’s fully booked then you will have to take care of the accommodation for your family by yourself.
