Story of Day 1
by XuAn
Conversations will be the thread that connects us together.
On the bus
My third Art of Hosting training and first day on the bus with other participants. There were quite a lot of new faces coming to the training this year. I knew a few people but not all. I wasn’t expecting anything much. But I was sure that I wasn’t ready to be too vulnerable. We usually use the word “TYPICAL” . A typical me - a too vulnerable one. I’m not ready to show that side of me to others.

But who should I be? How not to be me? How would people see me at the end of the training? I might end up sticking with people who know me by heart rather than opening my circle and letting new people in. Just to be safe! I’ve never been scared of being myself like now. That thought follow me all the way on the bus. And I was sitting by myself just to prepare myself to not be myself.

Arrived
I was assured a little when I saw familiar faces in the hosting team welcomed us at the entrance. I felt more at home than ever. We then quickly moved to the training room for the opening circle.  Narayan started out with the story that led him to join AOH and about the calling question this year which was also being discussed on the other side of the world, where the culture is totally different from here. But somehow we were holding the same question. What would be shared on the other side? I’m curious. Turns out, we were not so different. We expressed ourselves in many various ways, but it actually came from a same source.
I love stories. And two beautiful stories from the opening circle eased my fear and made me want to get out of my shell and join in with others.

Ai continued with the  story about Bilum weaving. The bag that is made in Papua New Guinea, where the culture are varied as well as the language, but they shared an ordinary but unique object, the Bilum bag which was made from a local tree. And the bag is carried in their daily life with their personal stories woven in every thread of the bag from generation to generation. It’s apart of them. The story really sat with me throughout the training.

The process of making the bag is a journey, it came alive through pain and joy, with sweat, tear and stories that were shared while they were together making the bag. The bag seems  ordinary until the story behind it was revealed.

There so much in a person that we cannot tell just by the look. Our past, our experiences, that all contributes to make us the person we are today. Like Bilum bag, it’s just another bag before the story was told. If we say each person is a story, then Every story need to be told and listened with sincere. It made me think of our significant which is our signature that if it were taken away from us, It’s not us anymore. Am i ready to bring my essence to the circle for the days ahead?
